I’ve Been Raised By Single Dad, Mombasa Boy Who Topped Public Schools in KCPE Says

Top KCPE candidates in Mombasa county The 15-year-old scored 410 out of a maximum of 500 marks in the recently announced KCPE results. He scored 83 points in English, 82 in Kiswahili, 90 in mathematics, 75 in Science, and 80 in social studies. Mwabini, who attended Khadija Primary School, is now the talk of the town following his exemplary performance in his backyard, Mombasa city. He had four As and one A minus in the five subjects.  Mwabini said that he grew up under the care of his father after his mother left their home after falling up with his dad when he was five years old. “It has not been easy to get her,e considering that we have only stayed with our father after our mother left. Though I missed motherly love, our father has always been there for us. He gave me everything I needed for my studies and contributed greatly to my success,” he said. Selfless Mombasa single father The Khadija Primary School champion further said that despite his father being a mason, he has always done his best to give them the best of life and support them with love and motivation.  “Baba yangu anafanya kazi ya mjengo, hana pesa nyingi lakini kile kidogo anapata yuwatusomesha sote.Hatujawai lala njaa. (My dad works in the construction site and has been educating us with the little he gets. We have never gone without food),” said Mwabini. He said he joined the school in 2020, shortly after COVID-19 struck. He was emerging among the best in his class since joining the public primary school. “I have never scored below 350 marks since joining the school. I was expecting to score 420 marks because that was what I was getting through the year, but I have gotten 410,” said the boy, who was also the prefect of his class. He explained that navigating the balance between leadership and his studies had helped him grow, and he expects to get better when he joins high school. Though this was not the best mark I expected, I am grateful, and I hope my mother will be happy wherever she is,” said Mwabini.  He hopes to join Kapsabet Boys High School in Nandi county and later advance his studies in pursuit of his university lecturing dream job. His father, Peter Khwaka, confirmed that he had separated from his wife 10 years after the two had three sons together. Mwabini is his second-born child. “He is my second born. He is a brilliant and responsible boy. His older brother has completed high school. I am proud of Mwabini and all my children and urge all parents to always support their children with whatever they have,” he said. He steered away from the separation with his wife, saying that he was thankful his children were thriving. He asked for support to facilitate his son’s high school education as Mwabini’s headteacher lauded him as a hardworking and focused learner. Mwabini emerged the best in the backdrop of female students performing better than their male counterparts, improving the school’s mean grade from 252 in 2022 to 262 in 2023.
