Preliminary investigations indicate that Fan, found wounded in his car with a knife, acted out of frustration over the division of assets in his recent divorce, as per an abcNEWS report. Images and videos showing the chaotic scene of people lying injured on the ground and the car fleeing were widely shared on Chinese social media before they were swiftly censored. According to NPR, hundreds of rescue personnel from Zhuhai and Guangdong province responded, along with more than 300 healthcare workers from five hospitals working tirelessly to treat victims.
In a solemn show of remembrance, candles and flowers were placed at the site by Tuesday evening. Around 30 people gathered at the sports centre’s gate to pay their respects, with delivery drivers stopping to add bouquets to the growing row of floral tributes. Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the incident in a statement Tuesday evening, November 12, calling for the perpetrator to be punished strictly according to the law.
He urged local governments to intensify preventive measures to address potential risks, prevent extreme incidents, and manage conflicts promptly. Meanwhile, this tragedy unfolded as Zhuhai hosted the People’s Liberation Army’s aviation exhibition, which opened on the same day.
