Uhuru Kenyatta Sits Meters Away from William Ruto in DRC, Video Ellicits Reactions

Former president Uhuru Kenyatta and his successor William Ruto were among the dignitaries who attended the swearing-in ceremony of DRC President-elect Felix Tshisekedi in Kinshasa. Fourth president Uhuru Kenyatta and President William Ruto met in DRC.  The two leaders, who have been at loggerheads since the 2022 General Election, did not show any signs of animosity as they witnessed the historic event. However, a video clip that went viral on social media showed Uhuru and Ruto sitting a few meters apart. A section of observers claimed the duo was seemingly ignoring each other. They listened to the speeches through earphones. The video sparked mixed reactions from Kenyans online, with some saying they were simply focused on the occasion and had already exchanged pleasantries before the ceremony. Uhuru and Ruto fell out after the latter declared his intention to run for president in 2022, against the wishes of the former, who had endorsed Raila Odinga as his preferred successor. The rift between the two widened after Ruto’s allies accused Uhuru of orchestrating a plot to sideline him from the government and sabotage his presidential bid.  Ruto later won the election by a narrow margin. Why did Kenyatta board Ugandan airlines to DR Congo? Uhuru landed at the N’Djili International Airport on the outskirts of DRC’s Kinshasa capital on Friday, January 19. Kenyans spotted an oddity in Uhuru’s boarding of a Ugandan Airlines bird. The last time he was in Kinshasa, Uhuru disembarked from the presidential Kenya Airforce aircraft, preserved of the presidency. With his status of being retired head of state, he would have boarded a Kenyan stately plane, the netizens argued. “Why would Uhuru Kenyatta dump Kenya Air Force for Uganda Airlines? Anybody?” posed Allan Obare.
