Politician and NARC-Kenya leader Martha Karua has marked a significant milestone in her illustrious career by launching her first memoir, Against the Tide, on Sunday, November 17.

The invites-only event, held at a city hotel, brought together family, friends, and political allies to celebrate her new role as an author.

Dressed in an elegant, floor-length gown, the 67-year-old politician, affectionately known as the Iron Lady in political circles, shared the motivation behind her memoir.

“This book is a labour of love, and it reflects the love I have for Kenya,” she told attendees during the reveal.

Against the Tide is a call to action, urging readers to persevere in the face of adversity. Karua’s memoir also delves into her journey as a trailblazer in law and politics, offering a deeply personal perspective.

Reflecting on her early career, Karua shared a throwback photo of her admission to the bar in 1982, recalling, “The year was 1982 when I was admitted to the bar as a practicing advocate. By then, I had begun my career as a Magistrate in Nakuru at the age of 24. The road ahead seemed daunting as my political consciousness was awakened with the prevailing political situation in the country then; the failed coup d’état.”

She continued, “Thirty-eight years later, I was conferred to the rank of Senior Counsel following an illustrious career in public service and private practice, successfully arguing cases that have set legal precedence. It has not been easy. I have faced each tide that has come my way and overcome. My story is a story of resolve to go against the tide, and overcome obstacles, losses, and betrayals that come your way.”

The ceremony featured touching moments, including Karua’s grandchildren milling around her in awe. She also posed with guests on a blue carpet as they offered her congratulations and presented her with bouquets of flowers.

Among those in attendance were Kiambu Woman Representative Muthoni wa Mucomba and Kirinyaga Woman Representative Betty Maina.

Karua also delighted fans by sharing snippets of the event on her TikTok page, where admirers celebrated her legacy.

Here are some of the congratulatory messages from TikTok:

“Incredible great lady,” wrote Akiira Kellen.

“Martha, you are my mentor. Keep going. Good job,” shared Ken.

“Looking cutesy, demure, mindful, and lovely. Congratulations, Iron Lady,” said Ann Lemaiyan.

“Great woman of the mountain. Congrats Hon. Karua!” added Cagish.
