Kelvin Kiptum: 3rd Occupant in Ill-Fated Car Sharon Chepkemoi Escaped with Injuries, Police Say

New information has emerged over the untimely death of world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum. Kelvin Kiptum was driving the ill-fated vehicle.  The police report seen by TUKO.co.ke, says Kiptum was driving his vehicle registration number KDL 566F, Toyota Premio, when the accident happened at Kaptaget Forest along the Eldoret-Ravine Road. Kelvin Kiptum: How did the tragic accident happen?  According to the report, there were three occupants, including Kiptum’s coach, Gervais Hakizimana, and a woman identified as Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei.  “Occurred at Kaptagat Forest area along the Eldoret-Ravine road. It happened that one Kelvin Kiptum, the Chicago Marathon World Record Holder, was driving his m/vehicle reg. number KDL 566F Toyota Premio carrying two passengers, namely Gervais Hakizimana Rwanda, male adult aged 37yrs-his coach—and Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei Keiyo, a female adult aged 24yrs from Eldoret heading towards Ravine,” the police report reads. The police report indicates the world record holder lost control, veered off the road, and entered a ditch. Kiptum and his coach died on the spot, while Sharon sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment. “Upon reaching the location of the accident, he lost control and veered off-road entering into a ditch on his left side. He drove in the ditch for about 60 metres before hitting a big tree. As a result, Kelvin Kiptum and Gervais Hakizimana died on the spot whereas Sharon Chepkurui Kosgei escaped with serious injuries and was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment,” the police report added.  All you need to know about Kelvin Kiptum’s accident Marathoner Kelvin Kiptum’s car, a Toyota Premio, was reduced to a pile of scrap metal. Kenyans were saddened that the champion passed away just five days after his world record was ratified by the international governing body World Athletics. His Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana, also died in the tragic road accident on Sunday, February 11. Kenyan leaders led by ODM leader Raila Odinga have mourned the champion whose death has thrown many into mourning.
