The completion of Kanjeru Stadium in Gitaru Ward of Kiambu County is set to transform and offer sports lovers some of the modern training amenities they were yearning for in ages.
The Ksh 186 million facility has a seating capacity of 16,000 spectators and will provide a modern playing field, improved drainage, and well-maintained turf. This development addresses the long-standing challenge of inadequate training grounds for young athletes in the county.
For years, footballers and athletes in Kiambu County have trained on rough, uneven grounds with potholes, dry grass patches, and rocks that increased the risk of injury. During the rainy season, fields became muddy and unplayable, forcing teams to cancel matches or train under difficult conditions.
John Riziki, a young footballer from Kiambu, recalls the challenges.
“We play on grounds that felt like obstacle courses. The ball would change direction mid-pass, bounce off unexpected rocks, and sometimes we trip and get injured,” he said.
The new stadium will provide smooth playing surfaces, proper drainage, and quality turf. For young athletes, this upgrade is a significant step forward.
“Football has kept me focused and disciplined,” John adds. “With a proper stadium, we can train without worrying about injuries, play serious matches, and attract scouts.”
However, the delay in completing the stadium has been a concern. Initially set for completion in March 2025, the final touches are still ongoing, leaving athletes and coaches hopeful but anxious.
“One of the biggest challenges has been the lack of larger grounds to accommodate all players during competitions,” said Peter Miingi, coach of DSI Gitaru All Stars. “With Kanjeru still under construction, teams have had to train on small, overcrowded fields, limiting their potential.”
Miingi emphasizes that talent alone is not enough. Without proper training facilities, young athletes struggle to compete at a high level.
“The stadium will be a game-changer, but we need it completed as soon as possible—within timelines,” he says.
Beyond sports, the stadium will serve as a multi-purpose venue for other community events and generate economic benefits. The construction phase has created jobs, and once operational, local vendors, transport businesses, and small enterprises will benefit from increased foot traffic during matches and events.
More importantly, the stadium will offer young people a constructive outlet, helping to keep them engaged and away from crime and substance abuse.
Kanjeru Stadium demonstrates the impact of investing in youth and sports infrastructure. While Kiambu County is making progress, many other counties in Kenya still lack adequate sports facilities.
As completion nears, anticipation among young athletes like John Riziki continues to grow. The long wait for proper training grounds is almost over. Once the first match is played, it will mark a victory not just for the players but for the entire community.
