Winnie Mbesa, a Nairobi tour operator, recently embarked on a memorable journey to experience the Lamu archipelago. According to her, it was a captivating adventure filled with breathtaking beauty and captivating stories, all under the watchful eye of the setting sun.   The experience was even more beautiful because the businesswoman was guided by seasoned sailor Omar Lali. Winnie disclosed that anticipation filled the air as she boarded the traditional Mozambican dhow, leaving the bustling Shela Village behind. “Lali is a great captain and sailor, accentuated by the fact that he embodies years of wisdom,” she praised. Armed with a bottle of Baccolo Apassimento Rosso Veneto, a rich red wine, Winnie eagerly anticipated the magic that awaited them. With every sip of the velvety wine, Winnie felt transported to a world where time stood still. She says Lali’s stories breathed life into the ancient structures across the island, revealing the coastal gem’s rich history and diverse cultures. Winnie discloses that Lali recounted tales of seafaring traders, intrepid explorers, and great adventurers, every word igniting his passion for Lamu. As if under a spell, the worries of daily life faded away, replaced by a sense of tranquillity and contentment. “Lamu is extraordinary, a true gem waiting to be explored. Beautiful beaches, rich Swahili architecture and culture, vibrant markets and narrow streets,” she continued. After breathtaking hours of sailing through breathtaking natural beauty, darkness started setting in, forcing them to head back ashore. Although the journey had ended, its memories would forever be etched in Winnie’s heart, and she had learned a new thing: “Lamu is more than just a destination. It’s a place where stories come to life, the past and present merge, and the sunset sail is just the beginning of a lifelong love affair with this remarkable archipelago” That potentially explains why the tourist destination is busy, expensive, and fully booked annually.
