Matuga MP Kassim Ali Sawa has been arraigned in Mombasa over alleged robbery and wilful damage to property.
The lawmaker appeared before Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Francis Kyambia but did not take plea as the chief magistrate assigned the case, Julius Nang’ea, was absent.
According to the charge sheet, the MP is accused of robbery and destroying a building belonging to a businessman.
The charge sheet shows that the suspect, jointly with others not before the court, wilfully and unlawfully destroyed a property belonging to Mr Riziq Fundi Bakari worth Sh1 million.
He is also accused, jointly with others, of stealing a freezer, refrigerator, 35 plastic chairs, counter table, 20 cooking oil jerricans, 20 bundles of wheat flour, computer, television set, welding toolbox, a phone and a locker, all valued at Sh850, 000.
The MP is said to have committed the offence at Bamburi on October 17, 2009.
Matuga MP is said to have leased the plot to Mr Bakari in 2006 who operated the restaurant that was allegedly ransacked and destroyed by the suspect.
The MP is expected to appear before Mr Nang’ea on June 21 for plea taking.
