Being a photographer is something many assume they can be, but truth be told it is not for everyone.
In an interview with Mpasho, Naibei Amon shared what fuels his drive for photography.
‘I always wanted to be a photographer, Photography for me has always been a wonder. Luckily for me, my parents saw the signs early and they have always been very supportive.’
What are some of the challenges he faces at work?
‘Equipment is very expensive. You also have to keep marketing yourself as you perfect your skills.’
Does Photography pay?
‘It is very lucrative but there is a very big catch. It also requires patience.’
Before he ventured into photography Amon worked as a salesperson.
His advice to anyone who wants to pursue photography as a career?
‘Perfect your skill, invest in good equipment.”
In case you are wondering the talented photographer is still single.
Photography is a rising trend in Kenya. Among the most influential photographers are Muma Pix, and former Churchill show comedian Kapedo.
In a past interview, Kapedo said he did not take photography seriously until Covid-19 hit and left people jobless.
“I hadn’t started photography until when COVID-19 came. After that, the Churchill Show was closed down, and I was like, what was the next step? I was thinking of going back to the village,” he said.
Kapedo added that he decided to pursue his dream instead of going back to the village.
” I did not officially start photography until 2021. I had not mastered it; I wanted to inspire people to follow up on their dreams,” he added.
Kapedo revealed he charges KSh 100,000 and above, which comes with two photographers.
Types of Photography
Just like music, there are different levels of photography.
These are:
- Beginner Photographer- This refers to someone who is just starting in that career.
- Intermediate Photographer- This is someone who has learned the ropes but still needs to perfect his/her skills.
- Advanced Photographer- Refers to someone who has perfected the art of photography.
There are also different types of photography. They are:
- Portrait Photography.
- Maternity photography.
- Corporate Photography.
- Still Life Photography
- Landscape Photography
- Food Photography
- Wildlife Photography
- Macro Photography
- Fashion Photography
- Newborn Photography
While some go to a photography school, for some it comes naturally. Whichever the case is, don’t hold back on expanding and enhancing your skills.
Pay also depends on who or where the photography is taking place. A client who has a different location form the studio is expected to pay more.
