Kenya on Thursday recorded 1,008 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total caseload to 59,595.
This was from a sample of 6,,038 tested in the last 24 hours representing a positivity rate of 16 per cent.
Health officers have conducted 723,210 cumulative tests so far .
Kenya’s virus fatality rate has risen to 1,072 with a high of 21 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours.
The Ministry of Health in a statement confirmed the majority of the new cases were Kenyans, while 36 were foreigners.
At least 62 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit, 31 on supplementary oxygen and 13 others in the High Dependency Unit.
From the cases, 616 are males and 392 females while the youngest is a two -month-old infant and the oldest is 95 years.
Meanwhile, 802 patients have been discharged after successful recovery, raising the country’s total to 39,193.
Out of this, 679 were discharged from the home-based care programme, while 123 were from various health facilities.
A total of 1,262 people are currently admitted in various hospitals while some 5,189 patients are on home-based care programme.
Nairobi leads in the distribution recording 417 cases in one day.
Other counties with cases include: Mombasa 87, Kiambu 51, Kajiado 48, Nakuru 35 Kisumu, and Kakamega had 32 cases each. Trans Nzoia had 26 cases, Kilifi 24, Nyandarua 23, Kericho 23, Uasin Gishu 23 and Nyamira 21.
Machakos had 20, Migori 16, Nyeri 15,, Muang’a 14, Turkana 13, Siaya 10, Mandera 6, Homabay 6, Elgeyo Marakwet 5, Embu 4, Nandi 3, Kirinyaga, Bomet and Bungoma had 2 cases each while Samburu, Baringo, Wajir, Kwale and Taita Taveta had 1 case each.
The cases from Nakuru include 68 students and five teachers who tested positive for Covid-19 at Bahati Girls Secondary school.
CEC health Kariuki Gichuki announced on Thursday morning that one student who tested positive developed some complications.
“And is being treated at the Nakuru isolation and management centre. A medical team is monitoring the condition of the students and teachers in isolation at the school,” Gichuki said.
The numbers of positive cases in schools are worrying after another 52 from Salvation Army Kolanya Boys High School tested positive.
In as much as the cases are rising, President Uhuru Kenyatta has said learning has to go on.
