Kenyan rapper Mejja |
Kenyan rapper Mejja has revealed how his mum getting sick hampered his plans to further his studies.
In an interview with Kameme, he shared
Did he always want to be a musician?
‘I wanted to be an Archaeologist. But after High School, my mum developed health issues.
She developed a brain tumor and I couldn’t pursue higher education. It took a year for a diagnosis to be made. She lost her memory.
My grandmother passed around that period because she was very helpful to us.
My Family is Muslim, and my brothers are more into religion but I wasn’t.”
He also shared how growing up as a ‘big’ child made him lose his esteem.
“I never had the courage to tell someone I could rap. I could never even approach ladies as I was always teased over my weight.
I got confidence when I got to high school.
It never stopped but I got to a point where I got confidence. I would hit back at my body shamers.”
He added
” People are not the same.
There should be a subject that encourages people to accept themselves as they are, and how to boost their self-esteem.
To help people mingle with others.
I enjoyed playing basketball because that was my safe space, I was not being bullied there.”
