A young Busia man is over the moon after achieving a long-awaited achievement halted by several challenges. Eric Makokha could not contain his joy after he graduated from Maseno University on Friday, December 7.
Although most of his family members could not attend graduation due to unavoidable circumstances, that did not drain his joy after graduation. Which vocational training did Makokha join? Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Makokha recalled the educational challenges he faced that derailed his progress.
“After completing my Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2013, scoring 320 marks, I could not continue my education because of the lack of school fees. I went to stay with my grandparents, who advised me to join a vocational training centre. They gave me two options: tailoring or electrical engineering.
Since I was young, I chose tailoring,” he narrated. Makokha joined Nambale Youth Polytechnic, where he began tailoring classes despite financial issues. Which high school did Makokha join? In 2016, he joined St. Jacob Kaliwa Secondary School, and since he could not afford to buy a uniform, he used his tailoring skills to make one.
“There were continuous financial challenges, but I used my skills to make clothes, sell them and raise money for my fees. I remember one time when I spent two months at home because of school fees arrears. Luckily, in 2019, I got a bursary that helped me complete my secondary education, scoring a B on my KCSE exam.
I later joined Maseno University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Geography and Natural Resource Management with IT. I would continue making clothes to pay my fees and keep some for my upkeep,” he said
