A street at night |
In a surprising turn of events, Nairobi is experiencing a significant increase in the number of male sex workers.
This trend reflects a shift in attitudes towards male intimacy, challenging traditional norms and sparking widespread conversation.
Recent studies by the National AIDS and Control Programme, the Key Population Consortium of Kenya, Partners for Health and Development in Africa, the Global Health Program at the University of California San Francisco, and the Institute for Global Public Health at the University of Manitoba, Canada, indicate that male sex workers have seen a 76% increase in their numbers over the past decade, while female sex workers have recorded a 26% rise.
Men participate in male-to-male sex work (MSM) for a variety of reasons, including:
Economic Necessity: Many men face financial hardships and find traditional employment insufficient to meet their needs. S3x work provides an immediate source of income that can be more substantial than conventional employment.
Flexibility: S3x work often offers flexible hours, enabling individuals to manage other responsibilities such as family, studies, and still achieve higher financial returns compared to typical jobs.
Exploration of Identity and social stigma: Engaging in s3x work allows men to explore their sexuality in a safe environment while also being financially motivated.
Participation in s3x work can serve as a form of resistance against societal norms and expectations related to masculinity and sexuality.
It provides individuals with an opportunity to challenge preconceived notions about gender roles and sexual behavior
