EACC detectives on a covert operation along the Kisumu – Bondo road on Friday had hard time trying to arrest four traffic police officers at Kombewa.
There was drama during the sting operation that saw a traffic police officer cock his gun and another physically assault EACC detectives to avoid being arrested.
Determined to complete their mission, officers however managed to nab one traffic cop, a sergeant.
According to a report from the anti-graft agency, the policewoman was held in a suspected case of receiving a bribe.
EACC communication officer Yasin Amoro said that the agency had received numerous complaints from members of the public concerning traffic police officers soliciting bribes on major roads in the Western region.
Amoro said that the EACC Western Regional intelligence and operations team undertook a detailed covert surveillance and profiled several police check points for purposes of executing sting operations.
“The targeted check points had been mounted by police officers from different traffic police bases,” he said.
Amoro said that at around 10am on Friday, a sting operation was executed at the Kombewa traffic base along the Kisumu – Bondo Road.
“One police officer was arrested, another cocked his gun and fled the scene while two others commandeered boda boda riders and fled towards the police station,” the officer said.
“The Seme Sub County police Commander has been contacted to present the other officers who fled the scene and those who appeared in our surveillance footages,” he added.
The female officer who was arrested was taken to the EACC Kisumu office for processing.
A total of Sh950 in 100 and 50 notes was recovered from the arrested officer.
Seme OCPD, outgoing Kisumu county police commander Samuel Anampiu and the Nyanza regional police commander Karanja Muiruri declined to comment on the operation. BY THE STAR
