Zetech University vice chancellor Njenga Munene has told students that skills without technology will disadvantage them.
Munene said creativity, being innovative and being well versed with relevant technology will give them a competitive edge in the job market.
He added that modern technology is hastily taking up most jobs. The VC spoke on Saturday at the university in Ruiru while launching the Master of Business Administration programme.
He said students must apply soft skills in their area of specialisation and create a network of relevant people in order to succeed.
“Soft skills go beyond technical skills and we must endeavour to be techno-preneurial individuals because there’s a wide application of technology in almost all areas. Therefore, don’t miss out on the relevant technology,” he said.
The event was graced by Samchi Group of Companies CEO Esther Muchemi and Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya chairman George Mokua. Muchemi told students it won’t be a bed of roses after graduation.
Munene also urged learners to be entrepreneurial, noting that in the near future, close to 70 per cent of jobs held by people will be occupied by technological advancements.
“As a university, we are at an advanced stage of establishing an entrepreneurial ecosystem incubation hub, which will help us incubate students’ business ideas and innovations and later graduate them to industrial parks,” he said.
Munene told the students to face the challenges and have a positive attitude to overcome them to be successful.
“Don’t let the challenges deter you from achieving your goals,” she said.
At the same time, the VC noted that the introduction of the master’s programme, its first master’s course, was informed by high demand.
He said the MBA will cover six thematic areas—strategic management, procurement and logistics, human resource management, business intelligence and analysis, finance and investment, and Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
“We are committed to delivering a quality programme to our students. We have entered into partnership with various industry players who will give our students industrial exposure as they study.
“This will ensure that we produce competent and innovative leaders in their respective fields,” Munene said.
Deputy VC Alice Njuguna said the institution has adopted a realistic strategic plan that will guide them towards having an edge in academic and research excellence.
She noted that faculty and staff development will be upheld to enhance quality teaching, research, innovation and professional practice.
“We want our graduates to be resourceful and live in integrity so that they can be a problem-solving lot to make meaningful contributions to the community and the country at large,” she said. BY THE STAR
