A man who on Christmas Day chopped off his wife’s ear in Maragua town was arraigned on Tuesday, denied the charge and was granted Sh50,000 bond.
Mr Phillip Mwaura 34, was charged before Chief Resident Magistrate Shivai Agade at Kigumo that on December 25 he attacked Ms Alice Wairimu 36, occasioning her grievous harm.
He was charged with deliberately assaulting Ms Wairimu in the full knowledge that he was breaking the law.
He denied the charge and begged for non-custodial pre-trial engagement with the court before the hearing date saying he is a barber whose daily income is Sh100.
He said he was willing to make peace with his estranged wife as the case progresses, adding that he was not a flight risk since he had voluntarily surrendered himself to the police after he was accused of carrying out the attack.
Ms Agade granted him Sh50,000 cash bail and set the hearing date on February 15.
In the police statement, Ms Wairimu detailed how for 15 years she had persevered in an abusive marriage–that is yet to be solemnised–and any time she tried to break free, both parents would reconcile them.
In the same court, Patrick Mwenda Kirimi was fined Sh50,000 or serve one year in default for the offense of being in possession of 10 litres of Chang’aa.
He was accused of being found with the contraband on Christmas day in Maragua town where he was selling the brew.
He pleaded guilty saying he was trying to raise money to buy his ailing mother a Christmas gift. BY DAILY NATION
