Outgoing National Assembly Majority Leader Amos Kimunya has urged President-elect William Ruto to now focus on uniting the country.
Kimunya said that after last week’s polls, energy is likely to be redirected from development to contests, from healing to further division.
“It is my hope that the President-Elect will make it a national priority to work on the healing of this divided country. For a house divided cannot stand,” he said.
IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati on Monday Ruto the president-elect.
Ruto garnered 7,176,141 votes representing 50.49 per cent of the total vote, while his rival, Raila Odinga got 6,942,930, which was 48.85 per cent of the total vote.
Kimunya also congratulated all winners and urged them to be modest in their celebrations and show humility and grace in victory.
“We have had an intense, long, nerve-wracking campaign, and with God’s blessings, the people of Kenya have decided on their leaders at different levels, that they will entrust with the responsibility to deliver on their hopes for better lives and future,” he noted.
Kimunya last week accepted defeat even before IEBC announced the official results.
The legislator took to social media to thank the people of Kipipiri, where he served as a Member of Parliament for the last 15 years.
The MP said last week’s elections were historic for the Mt Kenya region, including Kipipiri, and will hopefully offer a moment of reflection.
The former Kipipiri MP urged the winners to work together with ‘opposition’, stating that embracing them over the next 5 years, is a sign of greatness.
“Let’s heal this nation together. I wish all of you well in discharging your respective responsibilities, as we build a better Kenya, that future generations will be proud to inherit. You can count on my support in this endeavour,” Kimunya added. BY THE STAR
