Constitutional lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has alleged that President William Ruto has excluded members of the LBGTQ from his government.
In a Friday, December 23, 2022 tweet, Ahmednasir argued that the previous government under former President Uhuru Kenyatta had 5 LBGTQ members and over 12 senior staff in the State House.
“H.E @WilliamsRuto must be called out for excluding members of the LBGTQ from his govt. Contrast this with Uhuru’s commendable policy. Uhuru’s cabinet had 5 LBGTQ members & over 12 senior staff in the State House/Office of the President. President Ruto has ZER0…YES ZERO! @makaumutua,” Ahmednasir Abdullahi tweeted.
The sensational claims have raised eyebrows among a section of Kenyans on Tweet who have sought clarification on the said topic.
Lawyer Abdullahi has been a close ally to President Ruto but he always calls him out whenever he feels he is in the wrong.
In September 2022, President Ruto said that he respects everyone and what they believe in, adding that the same should be extended to those of contrary belief.
“We have Kenyan law, Constitution, traditions, and customs. We will continue to respect other people’s customs as they respect our customs and our tradition,” he said in an interview with CNN.
He added that he does not think that LGBTQ rights are an important topic for Kenyans.
In the past, President Uhuru Kenyatta had told CNN that the LGBTQ community was not agreeable and a major issue in Kenya.
“This is an issue of society, of our own base as a culture, as a people, regardless of which community you come from, this is not acceptable, this is not agreeable,” Uhuru said then.
Commenting on the remarks at CNN, Ruto said Uhuru was “spot on”.
“We do not want to create a mountain out of a molehill. This is not a big issue for the people of Kenya,” he said.
“When it becomes a big issue for the people of Kenya, the people of Kenya will make a choice.”
He said his administration will focus on the issues relating to economic growth and commit to raising the living standards of Kenyans.
“When the issue of homosexuality and the rights of LGBTQ will come, the people of Kenya will make a choice and we will respect it,” he added.
In 2015, while speaking at a Nairobi Church service, Ruto said the country had no room for homosexuals.
“The Republic of Kenya is a Republic that worships God. We have no room for gays and those others.”
