The Ministry of Education has directed headteachers not to charge any fees for Grade 7 learners in public schools.

The government has released Sh9.6 billion for junior secondary.

“We worked on a figure which is closer to that of senior secondary school and the President accepted,” Education CS Ezekiel Machogu said.

The government will send Sh15,000 as a capitation for every Grade 7 learner for this academic year.

Machogu directed that parents only pay for uniforms which will be changed in Junior Secondary Schools.

“The amount the government has been given is 22,244 for secondary and Sh1,420 for primary school,” he said.

The grade 7 learners will report to school on January 30, 2023.

According to the Basic Education Act, Public schools should not charge any school fees because the government gives capitation for every student.

Schools only charge for uniforms.
