Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina has backed the government’s idea of relocating roadside markets away from the highway.

This is after over 50 people were involved in an accident at Londiani junction after a truck lost control and run over pedestrians, business people and matatus which were parked by the roadside.

In order to safeguard business people along the highway, Ledama said he will construct a modern market in Narok County.

“As the first step, I will begin the process of constructing a modern market at Eor Ekule Center assign the existing businessmen and women’s stalls in the market as well as help advertise along the highway to drive traffic to the market, which is adjacent to the highway! Hopefully, we can save a life,” Ledama said.

He said traders in his home town chose to build stalls along the highway for lack of infrastructure and make a living.

“Our traders chose to erect temporary stalls along the highway to make a living and stay away from the Main Market marked in Red for various reasons which include lack of infrastructure,” Ledama said.

The Londiani accident has occasioned calls to have traders operate away from the highways.

Witnesses said the driver of the truck was trying to avoid hitting a bus that was parked on the road after developing a mechanical hitch before losing control.

Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen said the government will relocate all roadside markets to curb accidents.

He added that counties and the National government will provide spaces for the markets.

The CS said the markets will not be far from the road.

“We shall remove all the markets from the roadside. The County and National government will provide markets not very far from the road so that people who are selling products to travellers can get the opportunity,” he said.

“As a ministry, we are ready to provide access roads for the markets to be moved out and vehicles that are intending to buy goods along the highway to have entry and exit.”   BY THE STAR
