Moment of truth: Tribunal to deliver ruling on Jubilee leadership issues

News

The Political Parties Dispute Tribunal is expected on Monday to deliver a ruling on Jubilee party leadership issues.

The ruling will be delivered at 2:30 pm.

The ruling will determine which leadership factor (pro-Uhuru Kenyatta or President William Ruto allies) will lead the Jubilee party.

Last month, the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal barred the Jubilee rebel faction led by EALA MP Kanini Kega and nominated MP Sabina Chege has been barred from acting on behalf of the Jubilee party.

The Tribunal in a directive to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties also stopped the outfit’s decision to exit the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

“It is hereby ordered that pending hearing and determination of the complaint and application filed herein inter partes, interim conservatory orders are hereby issued restraining all parties hereto and/or their representatives jointly and severally from issuing any communication and/or making any public representations on behalf of the Jubilee party, the order by the PPDT read.

“…and further staying communication dated 6th and 13th June 2023 issued by the 3rd Respondent and any other communication and or decisions that may have been issued and/or taken by any of the parties hereto on behalf of Jubilee party during the pendency of these proceedings.”

On June 6, the pro-President William Ruto Jubilee MPs resolved to exit the Azimio Coalition partnership in a National Executive Committee meeting.

On June 13, they issued a notice of intent to withdraw from the coalition but the decision now remains suspended.

The order also barred the Kega side from transacting on behalf of the party.

The directive by the Desma Nungo-led tribunal also means Kega and his allied leaders cannot proceed with their planned NDC, which is slated for July 22. This is until the matter is heard and resolved.

The Kega and embattled secretary general Jeremiah Kioni-led factions have been fighting for the heart of the former ruling party.

The two sides have been operating as two different entities.

In February, at least 32 Jubilee MPs met with President William Ruto and his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua at State House.

The Jubilee legislators pledged to work and support President Ruto-led government.

This was despite Jubilee being a member of the Azimio la Umoja One coalition which is led by opposition chief Raila Odinga.

On May 25, a faction backed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta kicked out Jubilee party rebels including nominated MP Sabina Chege, MP Kanini Kega, and Nelson Dzuya.   BY THE STAR
