Duale: Politics of deceit, hypocrisy holding Kenya back

News

Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has called out Opposition leader Raila Odinga, accusing him of being selfish and insincere.

In a statement on Thursday, Duale was amazed how Raila, who knows about the economic challenges Kenya is facing, is the first one to castigate the government after he lost the August 2022 elections.

“It baffles me that a man who, barely a year ago, before the last general elections, not only knew the intricacies of reviving our economy then, but before a national TV station, passionately articulated the challenges facing the country as being the ripple effect of a conglomeration of other global setbacks, could now – after losing elections – be the first to castigate the government,” Duale stated.

CS  Duale further stated that such politics of deceit and hypocrisy have held us back this long.

Wading into Wednesday’s demonstrations, the former Garissa Township MP said the pockets of demonstrations littering the country have nothing to do with the cost of living.

“They (organizers of demos) lack sincerity of motive and are driven by selfish individuals with insatiable appetites for power and privilege. Even if it takes losing the lives of innocent civilians,” Duale added.

More than 300 people have been arrested across the country during the anti-government protests on Wednesday.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said cases of lawlessness happened in parts of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya and Nakuru counties.

He noted that those arrested will be charged with crimes including looting, malicious damage of property, arson, robbery with violence and assaulting law enforcement officers.       BY THE STAR
