Senator wants SDGs roadmap reviewed to accelerate execution

Nominated Senator Catherine Mumma has moved a Motion seeking to compel the State to come up with revised roadmaps that will accelerate implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mumma argued that implementation has been affected by drought since 2019, invasion by desert locusts, the Covid-19 pandemic and the current strained state of economy.

She wants the State in consultation with governors to review roadmaps. This must take into account shocks that have impeded or are likely to obstruct implementation of SDGs.

“This Motion is seeking to require that the national Government and the county governments to come up with a framework that can assist the Senate and the National Assembly to speak confidently,” she stated.

She added: “They should say as Kenya, we have moved this far on this target number one and seven. However, we are not doing very well on this other target and the reasons as to why we are not doing well are these.”

Nominated Senator Beatrice Ogola said lawmakers are keen on SDGs because a number of them talk about the mandate of the Senate.

“The county governments draw some of their functions from the SDGs,” she explained.

Nominated senator Margaret Kamar said the roadmap should measure implementation of the SGDs.

“The biggest problem that we have in many of the laws that we have ratified as a country is the fact that we ratify and keep them safely in drawers and implementation becomes a problem,” she stated.

The 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 provides a shared global blueprint aimed at ending poverty, protecting the earth’s environment, climate and ensuring that people everywhere enjoy peace and prosperity.

In Kenya, implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development started by the official launch of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2016.

It was followed by the development of the country SDGs roadmap to guide the transition from Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).    BY THE STAR
