Kenyan influencer Murugi Munyi recently opened up about her family’s long-standing battle with alcoholism.

Speaking during an interview with YouTuber Lynn Ngugi, the influencer recounted the challenges her family faced due to her father’s addiction, which left him emotionally unavailable despite his financial support.

Additionally, Murugi revealed that her sister is currently undergoing rehabilitation to overcome addiction, a struggle that has persisted for a decade.

“My dad growing up was an alcoholic, he was financially available but he was never there physically or emotionally. My sister is currently battling addiction. It has been 10 years of ups and downs with her.”

Murugi mentioned that she can empathize with Rono, who recently came out to speak about her battle with alcoholism as she sees similarities between Rono and her sister.

She expressed her support for Rono by sending encouraging messages during tough times.

“That is why I relate with Rono, I see my sister in her. I send her encouragement messages when I see her going through something,” Murugi shared.

The influencer emphasized the emotional and financial toll that addiction can take on extended family members who step in to support their loved ones battling addiction.

She acknowledged that her sister has had periods of sobriety lasting up to a year, and she and her family are committed to being there for her.

“There are times my sister can stay for up to a year without drinking. As her family, we can only be there for them. I tell her it’s not too late to change, sometimes she compares herself to her mates who are already married and working,” she asserted.

Despite the challenges, Murugi emphasized the importance of showing love and understanding to individuals struggling with addiction.

Murugi Munyi’s advice

Murugi highlighted the high cost of rehabilitation and the frustration that addicts may feel due to societal stigmatization and pressure to meet certain life milestones.

She encouraged those on the journey of addiction recovery to surround themselves with people who understand their struggle and to remember that every effort counts.

Her advice was to take it one day at a time and keep trying to overcome addiction.

“Society might make you feel like a burden, it can be frustrating. Hold on to people who understand that you are on the addiction journey. There is value in trying. Keep trying and do the best you can, Live a day at a time.”   BY K24 NEWS
