As the 2024 US presidential election votes roll in, former president Donald Trump has emerged with an early lead, securing key battleground states in a close race against Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.  Trump’s success in securing key states has placed him ahead in the electoral count, though Harris remains competitive, with projections showing her winning in Washington and Oregon. Each candidate’s path to the necessary 270 electoral votes remains tense and uncertain, especially as polls in major states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin are still being counted. According to CNN projections, Trump has already clinched wins in Ohio and North Carolina, securing a significant advantage in the Electoral College. Despite the challenges, Harris’ campaign team remains optimistic, especially in the crucial “Blue Wall” states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, which Democrats hope will secure a comeback.

Harris stressed the protection of democratic institutions, social justice issues, and reproductive autonomy in sound states. Trump addressed his supporters in a final push, denouncing concerns over election interference and reiterating his belief in his lead in key states. Harris, voting in her home state of California, thanked her supporters and urged patience as votes are counted. This election cycle has been marked by high voter turnout, with both candidates mobilizing their bases amid polarising debates on the economy, healthcare, and foreign policy. Analysts point out that voter sentiment has been influenced by recent economic challenges, including inflation and job stability, making these top issues at the polls.

 Additionally, Harris has drawn attention to the importance of safeguarding democracy, positioning herself as a defender of civil liberties. Most Africans have taken sides; some prefer Harris to Trump owing to her policies deemed as lenient in the critical areas that impact the continent and the others in the global south. Trump campaigned under the “Make America Great Again” banner; he holds that the immigrants in the country deprived the citizens of opportunities.
