The Talanta Sports City Stadium will cost Kenyan taxpayers KSh44.7 billion and will be completed in early 2026, more than a year before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Talanta Stadium will be one of East Africa’s best stadiums when completed. What Talanta Stadium will cost The construction of the 60,000-seater stadium began in March last year and is expected to conclude in February 2026, according to Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Soipan Tuya. She said the government will spend KSh44.7 billion on the project. She told the National Assembly Committee on Sports and Culture that KSh2 billion has been paid to contractors.
“The new Stadium is at 37 per cent complete and it is expected to be completed by February 28 2026,” she said. Talanta Stadium is one of the major projects undertaken by President William Ruto’s government. It will be one of the venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament that will be co-hosted with Uganda and Tanzania. Ruto inspected the stadium on Friday. He added that the project has created over 3,000 jobs “Impressed by the progress made in the construction of the world-class Talanta Sports City that will significantly elevate our country’s sporting profile,” he said in a statement on X. Kasarani Stadium and Kipchoge Keino Stadium are other major sports facilities under renovation ahead of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). Tuya said Kasarani’s ‘Phase One’ renovation cost KSh3.6b and then KSh3.1b will be needed for ‘Phase Two’. KSh1.1b million has been used for the ongoing renovations at Nyayo Stadium.
President Ruto also reportedly said a modern rail system will have to be built to help with stadium access, especially during the AFCON. Kenyans react to Talanta Stadium cost @EdgarMurek97241: “Mbona ya Cameroon yenye ilihost AFCON ilikua only 20 billion Kenyan shillings.” @Erickochief: “That is a very fair cost keeping in mind a new stadium built ground up, Amahoro stadium upgrade from a 25k seater to 40k cost the Rwanda government 21B Kenya shillings.” Talanta Stadium will likely host the final of the 2027 AFCON. @nimrod_wafula: “If that is the actual cost(kama kweli hakuna pesa zinakulwa) then it is unreasonable for our country to build such a stadium. That money can do so much.”
@ericmusyoki36: “It put into plan this can work. But under 2 years is it achievable na hii gava ya kutenga na kutengua. We can only hope.” Kenyans packed Nyayo Stadium for Harambee Stars’ FIFA World Cup qualifier against Gabon and then for the Mashemeji derby pitting Gor Mahia against AFC Leopards last month. Therefore Talanta Stadium could easily be full in a big game. Sports committee unhappy with Kipchoge Keino TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that the National Assembly Committee on Sports were not happy with the pace of construction Chairman Daniel Wanyama, who is Webuye west said they will ensure the stadiums are completed on the timeline given.
