Business owners from Mukuro market in Suna West Sub County have urged the Migori county government to build them latrines following the outbreak of cholera in the region that has so far affected 53 people and claimed one life.
Speaking to the media, the business owners committee head Joel Owour, raised concern over a latrine that is already filled up and flowing.
“This latrine is filled up, the town is dirty, and garbage is everywhere. We need the county to act now before more lives are lost,” said Owour.
Owour said the county government has been promising them latrines since last financial year but has not delivered on their promises.
Mary Akinyi, who is also a business owner, explained that the outbreak has reduced sales due to fear of contracting the disease.
Akinyi claimed that the untidiness of the market and town is alarming, requesting the county government to intervene immediately.
The residents emphasized the need for public health officials to increase awareness of preventive measures and provide clean water and sanitation facilities, especially in highly populated areas.
“We need the health officials to intervene right now before more lives are lost to create awareness to the public, “said Akinyi.
They called for the prompt removal and proper garbage disposal, which they say has been left unattended in various parts of the town.
Meanwhile, the County Executive Committee Member for Health (CECM) Caleb Opondi called upon the County residents to practice hygiene to reduce the Cholera outbreak that has for far affected Sub Counties of Suna East, Suna West, Kuria East, and Kuria West.
