New information has emerged regarding the last movements of Philip Eric Mutinda, the man accused of murdering Multimedia University student Sylvia Kemunto. On Tuesday, April 8, Mutinda was arraigned, and the court allowed the police to detain him for 21 more days to complete the investigations. Where did Philip Mutinda take Kemunto’s phone? His arraignment came a day after he confessed to killing his former girlfriend inside the MMU hostel. The first-year Electrical Engineering student told detectives that a confrontation arose after he visited Kemunto’s room with the intent of seducing her.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have established that after murdering Kemunto, he placed her lifeless body in a suitcase and transported it to his room. Citizen TV reported that in the early morning of Monday, March 31, around 4am, the suspect reportedly transferred Kemunto’s body to a water storage tank. Detectives have established that Mutinda picked Kemunto’s mobile phone and removed her SIM card and discarded it within the university compound. Later, the suspect visited Jesus Is Alive Ministry within Nairobi CBD and surprisingly donated Kemunto’s phone as a church offering. The suspect later headed to his rural home before confessing to his parents, who handed him over to the police. DCI investigators have since recovered the phone from the church, marking a crucial breakthrough. Detectives will now analyse the phone to get crucial leads regarding the main motive behind the gruesome murder.
