Cleaning staff at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital have gone on strike, claiming they have not been paid their salaries for the past 6 months.
The workers said they have been struggling to make ends meet and no communication has been made on the way forward.
Kakamega county CEC Peninah Mukabane on Friday absolved the county of blame, saying the contractor who hired them was paid by the hospital management and should answer why payment has not been made.
The contractor was unavailable for comment by the time of publication.
The workers have vowed not to return to work until they are paid their salaries.
One of the workers said, “Whenever we ask about our pay, we are told the funds are there and will be disbursed to us but several months down the line, we are still waiting.”
Another worker, who preferred to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal, said, “We have many obligations, we have to take our children to school and attend to other duties but we are not being paid. Something needs to be done. We are living like orphans.”
