School-going children in Nairobi are set to benefit from a road safety initiative that will see key infrastructural upgrades implemented around school zones.
This follows the launch of the Safe-to-School Project by AA Kenya in partnership with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) aimed at reducing risks for children by enhancing safety measures.
Kilimani Primary was among the schools selected for the latest phase of the project following similar interventions at Kayole One Primary School last year.
The school which has 1,650 students aged between 3 and 15, is in an area where traffic safety remains a pressing concern.
In collaboration with the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), AA Kenya will introduce measures such as zebra crossings, speed bumps, school zone signage, and protective sidewalks.
Additionally, students and school marshals will receive road safety training, reflector jackets, and traffic management tools to improve pedestrian awareness.
Speaking at the launch, AA Kenya Managing Director Francis Theuri underscored the need for urgent action to make school zones safer, noting that many child pedestrian accidents are preventable.
Theuri said the safety measures will reduce risks for children and ensure school zones are easily identifiable to drivers, creating safer commutes for young learners.
