People living with disability in Nandi County had a reason to smile after well-wishers and the County Government of Nandi donated to them various devices and foodstuff.
In an event held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church Kapsabet, Bethany Kids and Omeriye Foundation in partnership with the County Government saw more than 200 PLWD benefit from the gesture.
Local leaders present at the event lauded the County Government of Nandi as a leading example for other Counties for its continual assistance and fostering of People Living with Disability.
Nandi County Deputy Governor Dr. Yullita Mitei who was the chief guest said that it was within the county’s plan to continue supporting PWDs in any way possible.
“We have put a lot of efforts to make sure that PLWDs in our county are empowered and that’s why as you have heard we are a benchmark for other counties; we have improved our service delivery to them, especially in the offices and we will make sure the good work continues,” she said.
Dr. Mitei also announced that they plan to do a proper census for PLWDs so that they may get the right number.
Alfred Kipsang from Bethany Kids speaking said “independence is one’s greatest strength and their organisation work is to help PWDs tend for themselves”.
“When the disabled are able to be independent it lowers the burden of the parent or the caregiver making him/her able to tend to other duties,” he said.
On his part, the National Chairperson Special Schools Association Kenya Peter Sitienei, called upon the government to revamp and facelift special schools across Kenya.
Sitienei also requested that the Teachers Service Commission change strategy when employing special needs teachers.
“We have had challenges because recruitment is based on the local the sub-county, but not each Sub-county has a special school, so I request the TSC to base employment of special need teachers at the County level so that no teacher misses out as has happened in the past,” he added.
