Speaking on the Mic Cheque Podcast, Obinna revealed that despite the gravity of the 2020 incident, the two have since reconciled and remain close.
According to him, Babu Owino took full responsibility for what happened and has been financially supporting DJ Evolve and his family.
Babu Owino’s Role in DJ Evolve’s Recovery
“He (Babu) was taking care of the family, and he still is. Evolve and the family were like, ‘we are okay,’” Obinna stated.
He stated that the two were good friends long before the shooting and have managed to maintain that friendship.
“We were in the same clique—Babu, Evolve, and I. We’ve known each other since campus when I was campaigning for Babu. Even back then, when Evolve was playing at B Club, they were close. Babu didn’t just wake up and say, ‘Hey, let me shoot you.’ Mistakes happen,” Obinna added, attempting to contextualize the situation.
A key point of discussion was the public’s criticism that Babu Owino did not face the full force of the law.
However, Obinna argued that since the MP and DJ Evolve’s family had reached an out-of-court agreement, further legal action was unnecessary.
As part of their resolution, Babu Owino committed to covering DJ Evolve’s medical bills, buying him two houses, and offering additional support, including purchasing a vehicle and plans to establish a DJ academy for him.

DJ Evolve’s Testimony and Legal Developments
The 2020 shooting, which took place at a Nairobi nightclub, left DJ Evolve in critical condition. He spent months bedridden and underwent extensive medical treatment.
However, recent updates on his health indicate significant improvement, as he was recently seen moving around with the help of a wheelchair and even speaking publicly.
In June 2023, DJ Evolve made a surprising statement during his testimony in a misuse of firearm case against Babu Owino.
Speaking virtually from his bed, he stated that he did not see the MP with a gun on the night of the shooting.
“Did you see Babu Owino with a gun?” defense lawyer Duncan Okatch asked.
“No, we were just having conversations,” DJ Evolve responded.
He further explained, “I was injured by a bullet, but I don’t know from which gun. I just found myself in a vehicle being taken to the hospital… I later came to learn that Babu Owino was supporting me. As a friend, I expected my friends to look after me.”
The court also heard testimony from Babu Owino’s private security officer, Edwin Otieno, who stated that the MP’s firearm had been faulty and had jammed at a shooting range prior to the incident.

Financial Commitment and Compensation
Babu has repeatedly stressed his commitment to DJ Evolve’s well-being. In a court statement last week, the MP revealed that he has so far spent Ksh. 58.6 million on DJ Evolve’s treatment and upkeep.
The expenses include:
- Ksh. 17 million for an apartment in Kilimani.
- Ksh. 23 million in medical expenses.
- A monthly upkeep of Ksh. 70,000 to cover his living costs.
