The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following allegations of his marriage to Dora Chichah in the United States. Rev. Fr. Oghenerukevwe suspended for canonical violations after secret wedding. The marriage reportedly took place on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA, and footage of the event widely circulated on social media prompted the church’s response. Which law did Catholic priest violate?
In a statement seen by TUKO.co.ke and titled “Decree of Suspension”, dated Thursday, January 16, 2025, the Diocese, led by Bishop Anthony Ovayero Ewherido and Chancellor Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, addressed the matter. The statement revealed that prior to the marriage, Fr. Oghenerukevwe had requested on November 30, 2024, to be released from canonical obligations tied to his priestly vows. However, he proceeded with the marriage without completing the necessary procedure, which violated church law.
The Diocese emphasised: “He is prohibited from presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in any capacity. All canonical implications associated with this suspension take immediate effect (cf. Can. 1333). Right of appeal The statement further noted that Fr. Oghenerukevwe retains the right to petition for revocation or amendment of the decree but must demonstrate a genuine willingness to reform.
“Fr.
