Speaking after the tragic incident, Uasin Gishu police commander Benjamin Mwanthi stated that the accident occurred when a lorry collided with an oncoming matatu near the Chemoset area in Soy. Mwanthi stated that the matatu is believed to have been speeding before swerving out of its lane, causing the accident. He also confirmed that the accident left four people with serious injuries and that they were rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for treatment. Eyewitnesses said the vehicles collided on a narrow section of the road a few distance from the Soy Market. The matatu was headed to Eldoret while the truck was on its way back to Kitale Town
