Mount Kenya University (MKU) teams made a stellar showing at the recently concluded East Africa University Games (FEAS), held at Maseno University from December 15, despite facing tough competition from 38 universities across the region.

The MKU ladies emerged victorious in badminton and woodball, securing top honors in their respective sports.

In athletics, 18-year-old Viona Wangari, a bachelor student in Oral Health, delivered exceptional performances by clinching silver medals in both the 100m and 200m finals, denying Ugandan athletes a spot on the top three podiums.Other notable performances came from MKU athletes in taekwondo, karate, tennis, chess, darts, scrabble, table tennis, and volleyball, showcasing the university’s talent across multiple disciplines.

Despite the stiff competition, MKU finished 9th in the overall medal standings with a total of 7 gold, 5 silver, and 14 bronze medals.

The event saw Ndeje University from Uganda claim the top spot, followed by USIU-Africa in second and Uganda Christian University (UCU) in third.

MKU Sports Coordinator William Luta praised the team’s resilience and determination.

“This event posed challenges, especially with many players having to withdraw due to overlapping exams. We had to make last-minute adjustments to ensure those available could participate, and the results speak for themselves. The dedication, passion, and pride these athletes displayed in representing MKU were remarkable,” Luta said.

He also highlighted the need for further investment in individual sports, including sports-related scholarships, to ensure future competitiveness at the highest level.

The success of MKU’s athletes at the East Africa University Games stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to nurturing talent, both in academics and sports.
