Kakamega High School rugby Head Coach Amos Wamanga feels that the national sevens team Shujaa is heading in the right direction after their Dubai and Cape Town Sevens shows.
Shujaa finished 10th and eighth respectively in the two opening legs of the season, a performance Wamanga assesses as highly promising.
According to the coach, the team is adapting well in the high intensity level of the series, after a season in the lower tier – the Challenger Series.“The team has started on a good note after making a return to the series. They were very impressive in both legs, the team’s chemistry is top and you can see teamwork. The fruits of the hard work they have been doing was evident, which is a signal for good things going forward,” said Wamanga.
Shujaa are ninth in the league standings with 11 points after the two legs, and Wamanga believes fixing their defence will propel the team to greater heights.
“They need to work on proper recycling of the ball and we will see a much improved side as the season goes on, but so far they are clearly heading in the right direction ,”added Wamanga.
Winger Patrick Odongo was impressive in both legs, and the veteran tactician has backed the rising star to follow in the footsteps of the former Shujaa star Collins Injera.
“The boy is a star in the making, if he continues this way, he will certainly go far. He is still young and so far we have all seen what he is capable of doing, he can only get better ,”assessed the coach.
The next leg of the series will be the Perth Sevens in Australia between January 24 and 26, 2025.
