Mabonga reveals Bungoma Queens overall target ahead of Trinity tie

Bungoma Queens Head Coach Godfrey Mabonga is eyeing top four finish in the Football Kenya Federation Women Premier League (FKF WPL) this season.

Mabonga has so far guided the side to second position with 16 points, two adrift of the leaders Kibera Soccer Women.

Defending champions Kenya Police Bullets, Vihiga Queens and Trinity Starlets wrap-up the top five positions with 15, 14 and 14 points in that order.

Mabonga who took over from Robert Machio just before the start of the season feels the side has improved a lot from last season, in which they finished 10th, adding they are now the title contenders.

“I congratulate my girls for the good fight so far, attaining a second position isn’t a walk in the park and to me I’m targeting a top four finish, which with the proceedings so far, is a realistic target. Last season we were fighting relegation as we attained 10th position but this season was not fighting the relegation anymore,” noted Mabonga.

After falling 2-1 in the hands of Kenya Police Bullets last weekend, Mabonga has now set his focus on the weekend fixture against Trinity Starlets at the Bungoma Polytechnic Stadium.

“We’re facing Trinity this weekend. It’s a new team which has shown resilience and hard work but going by the preparations I have had with my girls, I’m sure of securing maximum points.

“I have five injuries currently something which has affected the squad but it’s my hope that some of them will be fit for the match on Saturday,” he added.

Nafula Becky (midfielder), Belinda Barasa (midfielder), Doreen Akinyi (Keeper), Zareta Kimono (winger) and Tim Kimono (midfielder) are all nursing injuries.

On his part, Trinity coach James Angila is unbowed ahead of the clash, coming from a 1-1 draw against Mombasa Olympic last week.

Angila feels they were unable to give their best in the match against Olympic due to the heavy rains experienced in the match day, and expects a more ruthless show from his team against Bungoma.

“We played very well despite the weather conditions against Mombasa. Securing a point away from home is always significant, especially against a strong side like Mombasa Olympic,” said Angila.

“There were mistakes we made that we need to address. We’ll use our game in hand as an opportunity to reclaim the strong position we held earlier in the season,” he said.
