Nairobi County Chief Environment Geoffrey Mosiria (c) impounded five vehicles after a man living with a disability blocked the road. |
A man living with a disability caused a traffic snarl-up in the Central Business District (CBD) after blocking a road to protest improper parking by county officials, including Members of the County Assembly (MCAs). The man, visibly upset, lamented how vehicles parked along busy roads and pathways had blocked access for people with disabilities.
The protest was triggered by an incident where another person with a disability was unable to pass due to a car parked at a zebra crossing. “I will not move until a breakdown is brought to tow these vehicles,” he declared while sitting on the road.
“These people have a habit of parking here, and now someone with a disability is stranded. This isn’t just about the rights of the disabled—anyone could need a wheelchair or crutches in the future due to old age or illness. I can’t vote for an MCA only to be mistreated like this.” A crowd gathered around the scene as the man vowed to remain in place until the issue was addressed.
Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria confirmed the incident and the swift response by county officials. Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Mosiria revealed that five vehicles were impounded during the operation. “This kind of disorder and impunity from matatu operators and private car owners must stop.
We cannot allow vehicles to park anywhere, even blocking walkways. Order must be restored in the city, and I commend our mobility team for their swift action. Together, let’s ensure Nairobi remains organised and accessible for all,” Mosiria stated.
