Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa has declined to record a statement with the DCI regarding last weekend’s chaos at a funeral in Limuru despite honouring summons to appear before detectives.
The legislator, who was in the company of former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi, said they were exercising their constitutional right by choosing to say nothing about the incident.
The Kiambu legislator said that while they were in the board room, the DCI officers were engaging in consultation outside.
“We have been in a boardroom at DCI HQ on Kiambu Road since 08:00 hours. We chose to exercise our constitutional right to remain silent and have declined to provide any information, as we are not obligated to assist the DCI with their investigation,” Thang’wa said.
“In the meantime, we are doing nothing in this boardroom while the officers engage in extensive consultations outside. We are unaware of whom they are consulting, but I’m sure you can make an educated guess. I am in the company of Peter Mwathi, former MP of Limuru, who also chose to remain silent.”
Senator Thang’wa was among leaders wanted by police for grilling over the chaos that was witnessed at a burial event in Limuru, Kiambu County.
On November 29, Thang’wa was summoned to the DCI headquarters in Nyeri to record a statement.
He, however, alleged that the DCI had declined to meet them at their headquarters in Kiambu but instead summoned them in Nyeri terming it ‘intimidation’ to silence them.
“They refuse to meet us at the CID headquarters on Kiambu Road but shamelessly summon us to Nyeri over an incident that occurred in Limuru. This intimidation will neither intimidate nor silence us. See you in Nyeri tomorrow at 10 am,” Thang’wa said in a statement on X.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was present at the Limuru event marred with chaos.
He, however, escaped unhurt while his cars were damaged.
Several other mourners were injured when suspected goons attacked the event forcing those in attendance to scamper for their safety.
The incident happened on November 28 at the Bibirioni Boys High School playground.
Thang’wa and his Nyandarua counterpart John Methu said the chaos was a direct attempt on the life of the former DP.
Gachagua insinuated that the State had intentionally withdrawn his security detail to facilitate such an attack.
“Earlier this week the government withdrew the final aspects of my security that were in place after the impeachment process we are contesting. We did not raise the issue with this decision although expectations were that any Kenyan who has served at the level of government that I was privileged to serve at, would be secured by the government even after leaving office,” he said.
“However it now looks like the decision to withdraw my security was to leave me exposed to the kind of attack we have witnessed today.”
Gachagua recounted the incident at the funeral of a young man named Erastus Nduati, noting that goons specifically targeted him and descended on mourners with all manner of crude weapons, indiscriminately attacking both women and children.
