Award-winning digital content creator, entrepreneur, and brand influencer Wanjiru Njiru have laid one of her biggest insecurities bare in a recent episode of the Joy Ride Podcast which she co-hosts with her husband gospel singer/song-writer and fellow content creator Ben Cyco.
Engaging in a conversation with her man, the new mom revealed to some extent she has been battling with her esteem levels since giving birth to their son.
According to Wanjiru, she has always been an overly confident woman throughout her life, however of late she finds herself yearning for affirmations especially when it comes to her outward appearance.
“I think I have found myself needing this a lot, and I am not sure if I have communicated this with you well so I don’t get it as much as I would want,” started the brand influencer as she picked a paper slip from a bowl that held a series of questions that they were tackling on the episode.
Expounding on what she meant she went on to detail, “I have always been confident with what I wear and how I look, but with motherhood that has changed, so that extra ‘you look nice’ when uhm… and you do it some times, well most times. For example when I get my makeup done, when I get my hair done goes a long way,”
Drawing an example of a moment that had her spirits crushed Wanjiru narrated how the first time she got a face beat after giving birth, Ben’s reaction was not as climatic as she had expected it to be. Which led to her doubts intensifying before the moment was righted.
“And I remember the first time I got my makeup done after a long while, I came to you and you didn’t compliment me immediately. And I was like waah (I was shocked,)” the digital content creator shared. Adding, “but you said it after 5 minutes… yeah, you said it…though after 5 minutes, which was good,”
Ben in his defense voiced he had taken time to comment on his wife’s new look as he was absorbing it all in since it was something new to him as well.
“I was trying to process it,” the gospel artist said interjecting Wanjiru’s little speech.
Concluding her line of thought the mother of one admitted to being in a position where she was required to constantly be reaffirmed by her man and just be reminded that she is still at the top of her game despite the physical changes her body has undergone after pregnancy and childbirth.
“But I think I have needed more affirmation now from you,” Wanjiru shared to which Ben Cyco confirmed he had heard her plight and would put it into consideration.
In a previous episode of their Joy Ride podcast, the couple opened up about the changes they’ve experienced since welcoming their son.
They both agreed on how the new arrival has strained their relationship, making them feel more like roommates than a couple despite being married for three years before expanding their family.
“I think the drives we’ve been taking have allowed us to connect… although Tawa is always there, I feel like the drives have really helped us,” Wanjiru shared.
Before she could finish her thought, Ben playfully added, “But you have to sit with him in the back while I’m just upfront like an Uber driver, switching between reggae playlists and adjusting the volume and the AC,” which made them both laugh.
Overcome with emotion, Wanjiru softly said to her husband, “I think… I just miss you,” highlighting the toll that juggling parenthood and their individual jobs has taken on them, especially after spending years without company.
Ben echoed his wife’s feelings, expressing, “I hope it gets better, you know… I hope it allows us more time to just go back to being us.”
