The primary suspect in the alleged attempted murder of businesswoman Florence Wanjiku Gichohi has surrendered to authorities. The National Police Service confirmed that Elias Mutugi Njeru, a pastor with Jesus Compassion Ministry Church, turned himself in at Nakuru Police Station early on Monday, November 25. Mutugi was accompanied by his lawyer from Gakuhi Chege and Associates Advocates.
Law enforcement officials re-arrested him and placed him in custody at Nakuru Police Station, awaiting his transfer to Menengai Police Station. “Today, November 25, 2024, one Elias Mutugi Njeru, a male adult and a suspect in the attempted murder case of Florence Wanjiku Gichohi reported at Menengai Police Station, surrendered at Nakuru Police Station in the company of his lawyer, Gakuhi Chege and Associates Advocates,” said the police. Why did Elias Mutugi allegedly attack Florence Wanjiku?
The surrender follows a manhunt launched after Mutugi allegedly stabbed his lover, Wanjiku, 18 times. The attack reportedly took place at their home in Rongai, Nakuru. Speaking from Optimum Hospital, where she is receiving treatment, Wanjiku detailed the alleged circumstances leading to the assault. She claimed that the incident occurred after their conversation about their business and personal issues at an entertainment joint.
Wanjiku further described their strained relationship, noting her failed attempts to end the union; the pastor allegedly refused to accept rejection. Police investigations into the case are ongoing as Mutugi awaits formal charges. In the wake of the attack, numerous Kenyans, including Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru and actress Catherine Kamau, have joined the call for justice for Wanjiku amid growing concerns over rising cases of femicide.
