Kenya has joined a prestigious group of nations at the inaugural convening of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes being held in San Francisco.

Represented by Special Envoy for Technology Amb. Philip Thigo, the ground-breaking global initiative aims to advance the science of AI safety and foster cooperation on research, best practices, and evaluation.

Kenya stands as the first and only African country in this groundbreaking group, which includes Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the UK, and the US.

“Privileged to lead Kenya to the Inaugural Convening of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes in San Francisco! Kenya is a founding member of this global initiative to advance AI safety science, foster collaboration, and establish best practices,’ Amb. Thigo wrote.

Chaired by the United States, the meeting brings together technical experts, AI developers, academics, civil society leaders, and scientists from around the world. The event highlights a global commitment to harnessing AI’s benefits while mitigating its risks.

“AI has immense potential, but its safe and responsible use requires a strong international ecosystem. This network will help address critical challenges, share knowledge, and avoid fragmented governance that could hold back innovation,”asserted Amb. Thigo.

The Network’s key areas of focus include managing risks from synthetic content, testing foundational models, and conducting risk assessments for advanced AI systems. Despite the evolving nature of AI risk science, members have agreed to establish a shared scientific framework for risk assessments, emphasizing six key principles: actionability, transparency, comprehensiveness, multistakeholder involvement, iterative processes, and reproducibility

Kenya’s participation in this inaugural convening underscores its commitment to a safer, more responsible AI future, contributing to the global effort to navigate the complexities of AI technology.
