The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has announced plans to commence the second phase of their nationwide strike in December if the government fails to honour their collective bargaining agreement (CBA) by November 30.
Speaking in Kisii, where KMPDU convened their annual general meeting for the Nyanza region, the union’s Secretary General, Dr Davji Atella, stated that the government has ignored their agreement, which was also deposited in court, despite the growing challenges facing medical practitioners.”We have already initiated contempt proceedings against all 47 counties and the national government. If they do not comply, then for sure, in December, we shall have a strike, and 2024 will go down in history as a year where KMPDU went on strike twice,” said Dr Atellah.
“We have given the government up to 30th November.”
“Today, as members of KMPDU Nyanza and members of KMPDU Migori and all the six counties, we are issuing a warning shot. Migori County, we are going to have a strike in the next 14 days unless all the issues we have are addressed as a matter of urgency,” Nyanza KMPDU Chairman Dr. Steve Ndong’a added.
Among the issues KMPDU wants the government to address are job promotions, payment of interns, and an increase in basic salaries, among others.
The meeting brought together doctors from Kisii, Nyamira, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu, and Siaya.
