Mavoko MP Patrick Makau has called out a faction of Wiper party members who have been agitating for his ouster over the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
There has been a push for the party’s disciplinary action against members who voted against the wishes of Kalonzo Musyoka-led party.
At least five members of the outfit defied the party’s call to vote against the impeachment motion.
These include, Farah Maalim (Dadaab), Danson Mwashako (Wundanyi), Charles Nguna (Mwingi West), and Robert Basil (Yatta).
However, party insiders said Makau would be spared from the purge because “he explained himself.”
The lawmaker explained that an opportunity presented itself; thus, he shouldn’t have wasted the chance.
Speaking while attending a burial at Tseikuru in Mwingi at the weekend, Makau, who is also a commissioner at the Parliamentary Service Commission, told off his critics, saying that he would be the last man to leave the umbrella outfit.
“You don’t go removing people from the party simply because they hold a different opinion. And those who are agitating for my ouster are members who found me in Parliament,” said Makau.
He went on to say, “Tell them that this is our party and we are going nowhere.”
Some party insiders say that the agitation for Makau’s ouster has been engineered by top politicians in the party.
The Kalonzo Musyoka-led faction of the Azimio La Umoja coalition had vowed to stand with Gachagua during the impeachment process.
The leaders had vowed to mobilise legislators and promised to thwart any attempt to impeach Gachagua.
Kalonzo downplayed Gachagua’s impeachment, terming it an illegality.
He called out legislators who voted to impeach Gachagua saying they were being used by the Kenya Kwanza administration to divert attention and cover its misdeeds.
