Two Kenyan Solar Companies Among Finalists Competing for KSh 160 Million in 2024 Earthshot Prize

Earthshot Prize has released a list of the finalists in line to win £1 million (about KSh 168 million) each in the 2024 Earthshot Prize, a global climate and environmental stewardship programme. These photos illustrate Keep it Cool (KIC) food preservation services for a motorbike ride to Markiti Market in Nairobi and d.Light staff (r) installing solar panels.  According to details seen by TUKO.co.ke, two Kenyan companies have made it into the list of 15 finalists for the 2024 Earthshot Prize. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa, on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

The Earthshot Prize programme was founded by Prince William and incubated in the Royal Foundation for a year in 2020 before becoming an independent organisation designed to discover, accelerate, and scale ground-breaking solutions to repair and regenerate the planet. The Earthshot Prize aims to catalyse an Earthshot challenge to urgently encourage and scale innovative solutions that can help put the world firmly on a trajectory towards a stable climate, where communities, oceans and biodiversity thrive in harmony by 2030. Which Kenyan companies are finalists?

The 2024 competition pool featured nearly 2,500 nominations spanning 139 countries, which is the largest-ever nomination pool in the prize's history.  Two Kenyan companies have made it out of the 2,500 nominations and become finalists. These companies are d.light, a major provider of solar home systems, and Keep It Cool (KIC), a solar-powered refrigeration solutions company. The two were also joined by GAYO, a Ghana-based youth-led waste management group. The three African finalists joined 12 other finalists from six continents, including first-time finalists from France, Ghana, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Nepal. “Representing every corner of the globe, these finalists are leading the way in solving some of the most urgent environmental challenges.

Their groundbreaking work is inspiring hope and action as we work to create a sustainable future for generations to come,” said Prince William in a press statement sent to TUKO.co.ke. What is the purpose of the Earthshot prize? The Prize is focused on discovering, spotlighting, and helping scale innovative solutions that the world needs if it is to achieve critical environmental goals collectively.  Solutions selected align with the five ‘Earthshots’ – simple, ambitious, and aspirational goals defining the world that can build future generations: The five goals are: Protect and Restore Nature; Clean Our Air; Revive Our Oceans; Build a Waste-Free World; and Fix Our Climate.

Based on the five goals, five winners will walk away with £1 million in each of these categories. Prince William and his fellow members of the prestigious Earthshot Prize Council, a diverse group of individuals dedicated to championing urgent and innovative action to protect the climate and our natural environment, will select the five winners of this year's prize.
