Multi-faceted media personality and digital content creator, Anita Nderu Raftery in a candid social media post has revealed the past month has been completely draining on her and her family, resulting in her experiencing insane burnout which saw her deactivate from the world for a while.

“September was tough for me, to be honest,” started off the former TV show host adding things had been so awfully to the extent that she came up with a befitting nickname for the trying month. 

“l even coined a term for it: PEMS – Physically, Emotionally, Mentally, and Socially draining,” Anita wrote in part. 

Getting into little details on some of the things that had made September unbearable for her, the bubbly fashion enthusiast revealed her toddler had been sick, which was something new in their homestead, and this had taken a huge toll on her on all fronts. 

“As a parent, I learned that after two years of our child not getting sick (I thought she had the antibodies of a superhero because I had COVID twice while pregnant with her), she started getting sick every day after starting school. As a result, I ended up with the most unbelievable, untreatable flu I’ve ever experienced.

I hated seeing how coughing (something she had never done before) hurt and shocked her, so we barely slept,” the ‘Overdressed Cook’ host wrote.

She went on to detail how her daughter, Kaya, whom she shares with her husband Barret Raftery, being unwell toppled over to her being unwell as well and completely drained as besides being a mother she juggles other responsibilities and job titles. 

“Between not sleeping, working, and trying to be present for all my other responsibilities, I completely drained myself. To top it off, my period decided to show up after waiting all month, just when I was already at my limit,” Anita’s post read.

Finishing up she noted October had come with some notable blessings as not only was Kaya doing better health-wise wise but Anita was also getting her much-deserved rest. She encouraged people to learn how to properly balance their life and responsibilities to avoid burnout. In her case, the former radio presenter noted going completely offline by switching off her phone helped ground her a little.

“Kaya is doing better now, and I’m so grateful! I finally got a full night’s sleep two days ago, but I still wasn’t fully ready to jump back into life as usual. Balance is important, but even with all the help in the world, life can really drain you to the point where your PEMS is completely depleted, and you feel like you have nothing left to give. I know it’s not unusual for me to go quiet online, but even with all the incredible work done by amazing creatives recently, I just didn’t have the energy to share.


I don’t know if this happens to anyone else, but sometimes, nothing feels great, I switched off my phone for days and it honestly felt great,” the last of her lengthy post read.
