As the world observes World Animal Day, residents of Lamu have been urged to protect their animals, both domestic and wild, for the sake of future generations.
Lamu boasts lush natural forests teeming with wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, elephants, and lions -- but which require protection and proper utilisation for posterity.
Ali Shebwana, a KWS warden, has encouraged residents to recognise the presence of wildlife and explore ways to utilise them for economic gain.
He said: "I urge the residents of Lamu to understand the significance of wildlife and to consider how they can leverage it to generate income."
On Amu Island, donkeys are particularly cherished for their contributions to the community.
The island has established a sanctuary where donkeys receive free medical care, and local stakeholders are advocating for the proper care of these animals to ensure they continue to serve the community.
Dr. Elvande Sande from the Donkey Sanctuary in Lamu also urged the residents to protect their donkeys from injury and ensure they receive proper nutrition and water daily.
"We would like to encourage the people of Lamu to take care of their donkeys, especially when they are ill, so they can continue to be of service," he says.
Najma Swaleh, a resident of Amu Island, echoes this sentiment.
"As humans, we have a responsibility to help these donkeys. If they fall sick, we should bring them to the donkey hospital so that they can recover and continue assisting us," she told Wananchi Reporting.
The economy of Lamu County is expected to thrive significantly if wildlife conservation is prioritized, alongside strategies to enhance tourism.
On his part, Lamu County Governor Issa Timamy has urged the residents to protect the animals, as they are a vital economic asset in our county.
"This world has enough space for both humans and animals, and it is our duty to protect wildlife in their natural habitats for the benefit of future generations," said Timamy emphasizing the responsibility of preserving and caring for these animals.
