Kiambu: Mum of Schoolgirl Spotted Selling Maize Uses Donations to Buy Land, Build House

Njeri, a Kiambu schoolgirl, touched the hearts of many Kenyans after a video of her selling maize by the roadside at night went viral. She was in her full school uniform, kneeling on dusty ground as she carried on with her business to help her family eke a living. The footage struck a chord with many Kenyans, leading to a wave of generosity as people rallied to find and assist her. Where’s Mama Njeri’s new house?  In a heartwarming update, Njeri’s mother disclosed that she used the funds to make significant strides toward improving their living situation. The family, fully aware of their initial financial struggles, bought a piece of land with the donations received and began constructing a home.

“Zile pesa nilibuy space na nikajenga huko Makongeni nyumba iko karibu kuisha (I used to funds to buy land and build in Makongeni. The house is nearing completion),” she wrote. Mama Njeri expressed gratitude to Kenyans for their generosity, marking a major milestone in their lives. Babu Owino pledged to support Njeri’s family When Njeri’s video went viral, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was among those who were moved by her plight. He expressed his desire to help the young girl, recalling his challenging childhood, during which he sold chang’aa to support his family. “This girl leaves Kisiwa Primary School in Thika every evening to sell boiled maize by the roadside.

It reminds me of when I used to sell chang’aa after school throughout my primary and secondary school life,” Owino shared on X (formerly Twitter). He praised Njeri’s resilience and assured her she could overcome the obstacles before her, just as he had. Babu Owino reiterated that challenges are temporary and pledged to sponsor her education and support her parents to start a business.
