The Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in its first reading stage in the Senate, has elicited vile reactions from Kenyans. Nandi senator Samson Cherargei is sponsoring a bill to amend the constitution to extend the presidential term limit to 7 years. The Upper House invited the citizenry to submit its views on the provisions of a bill sponsored by Nandi senator Samson Cherargei. The Constitution of Kenya Amendment Bill, 2024, in its first reading stage in the Upper House, elicited reactions with its provisions.
Should the bill be enacted, those in the presidency will enjoy their tenures for seven years, as opposed to the current five years for a single term. The same will trickle down to governors, Members of the County Assemblies, and Members of Parliament. Cherargei’s bill also seeks to introduce the prime minister’s post and make it appointive by the president; the holder of the PM’s post will be an elected MP. Currently, the post akin to that of the prime minister is the Prime Cabinet Secretary, which is being held by Musalia Mudavadi, who was appointed by President William Ruto through an Executive Order, as the position is not captured in the constitution.
