The family of Rebecca Cheptegei has revealed the heartbreaking reaction of her children upon learning about their mother's condition. Rebecca Cheptegei's Children Wept Bitterly After Learning About Mum’s Attack, Family Says  Cheptegei was a victim of a recent brutal attack reportedly over a land tussle with her lover, Dickson Ndiema. Speaking to The Standard, Cheptegei’s father shared that the children had been taken in by their grandmother, Agnes Ndiema.

  He said the marathoner’s daughters aged nine and 11, had gone to church when the attack occurred.  The distraught father added that his grandchildren wept bitterly after being told about the assault on their mother. "Her children are crying in the house after hearing about the attack," he said. "I have asked my wife to take care of them." The attack left the 33-year-old athlete with severe skin damage and inhalation burns that affected her throat and airways. Cheptegei died just two days after doctors expressed concerns about potential multi-organ failure due to the severity of her injuries. 

Details indicate that the sportswoman sustained 80% burns while her alleged attacker had 30% burns. Her family was on the verge of airlifting her to Nairobi for specialised treatment when she succumbed.
